“La Girona”
This website commemorates the loss of life on board La Girona.
La Girona was a Spanish Galleass, or naval warship, that formed part of the 130-ship Spanish Armada in 1588.
The Armada was defeated in the English Channel and the majority of the fleet tried to return to Spain by sailing around Ireland.
La Girona, having made repairs in Killybegs, attempted to sail to safety in Scotland but sank at Lacada Point, near the “Giants Causeway, with the loss of 1300 sailors and passengers.
